I am really looking forward to sharing recipes, pictures of food, and some kitchen tips and tricks that I’ve learned in future posts; however, I first wanted to write a post to provide some background. Here goes!
My goal here is to explain some of my thoughts and experiences in the past, and how they have led me to where I am today. Insecurities about body image and food have led me to explore different books and fads regarding what to eat, how much of it to eat, and what foods to avoid. In my experience, fads, no matter how strict, start something like this..
The first few days I am motivated and excited for my new regime [eat more veggies or eliminate desserts or eat more ice cream 😉 or whatever the goal is]. Then, after about a week or two, something happens that causes me to fall off the regime that I was on at that time. This can either be a “cheat” weekend or delicious-looking dessert that I couldn’t resist, or something along those lines.
Eventually, after this period of “healthier eating” inevitably ends, I think to myself, why am I even bothering with these struggles.. I should just eat what I want when I want to and enjoy life. After all, life isn’t about always being on a diet and not ever eating desserts, right?! Right! Ok, now that we’ve agreed that dessert is a good thing, I can continue..
About a month and a half ago, I saw a Facebook friend post about creating an online health and fitness community with the purpose of sharing goals and supporting each other in heath and wellness-related goals. I expressed interest to be added to this group, not having any specific or measurable goals for myself in that moment, but I decided to read through some of the posts in the group, to see what types of goals others were working towards. Then, I saw that a few ladies were doing the “Whole 30” program.
I had never heard of the Whole 30 at that point so I decided to Google it to figure out what it was. Here’s the link the program’s website if you’d like to learn more: https://whole30.com/.
To sum it up, the Whole 30 entails eating real, wholesome foods for 30 days. These wholesome foods include vegetables, meat, seafood, eggs, and fruits. Before I get any further, I want to mention that the Whole 30 was different from any other diet or program I have read about in the past or personally tried in ONE major way. The Whole 30 is NOT a program designed so that the participants lose weight. It is also not a diet that is telling you how you should be eating for the rest of your life. So what is it then? It is exactly what it sounds like, a 30 day program of eating wholesome foods.
The website explains foods that should be avoided during this program in more detail and why they should be avoided, but essentially, after just 30 days of not consuming certain foods (grains, dairy, legumes, sugar, alcohol), you can then re-introduce these food groups back into your diet, one category at a time, paying careful attention to how you feel after eating certain food groups. The whole point of the Whole 30 is to figure out which types of foods, if any, are causing your body any discomfort or pain or causing you to not feel 100% physically. Then, after you learn that information after this 30 day program, you can choose to continue eating as you did prior to the program, or alter what you eat in the future, based on what you learned.
As someone who is frequently a skeptic, I wanted to make sure I did my research on this Whole 30 thing (as if eating wholesome foods such as vegetables, meat, seafood, eggs, and fruits was going to somehow make me less healthy). Regardless, I was fascinated by this program and decided to check out a book that was written by the co-founders of the program called “It Starts with Food”. I can honestly say that this book completely changed my perspective on food, cravings, and how I eat… It may sound dramatic but I am serious. I highly recommend this book and I think it is very informative! It discusses the science of different foods but it also discusses the psychology of eating and how our brains can trick us into eating certain things…pretty interesting! Side note, I also decided to buy the Whole 30 Cookbook, which is shown in the image above.
Back to the Whole 30 thing… I decided to give it a try since I had nothing to lose. If I focused on eating healthier foods, I wanted to see if my occasional body aches, stomach pains, and random discomforts would subside, since the Whole 30 website explains that the foods we can eat can have a profound effect on our physical and mental well-being.
Today, I am now on Day 17 of the Whole 30 and I feel GREAT!
